The installation is a 3-dimensional representation of the Philippines flag in its symbolic colors and quantities. Called “Mailiw” which is Pangasinan for homesick, it is a tribute to the Filipino/a/x immigrants who desire to return to their motherland but can’t do so for many reasons, mostly tied to money or lack thereof.
Performance Elusive Matter by Martin Messier
Presented in some 50 countries, Martin Messier’s productions have received several prizes and nominations: a special mention at Prix Ars Electronica in 2010 listed for a Prix Opus in 2012 Best Experimental Short Film at the Lausanne Underground Film Festival

in 2013 the Canada Council’s Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award in 2014; a special mention by the jury at the 2015 Japan Media Awards; the World OMOSIROI Award in Japan in 2018; and in 2021, the 2nd Prize at Athens Digital Arts Festival.

The Garden of Illuminated Tales

The Garden of Illuminated Tales is an immersive experience where the public can walk through handmade lanterns filled with written and illustrated stories. School of Art students and alumni used their creative talents to create each lantern in this garden pathway.

Exploring concepts of life cycle and connection, imagine a glowing world of spore domes illuminating the sky above. In the way that fungi turn decaying materials into useful nutrients, discarded materials will be re-composed with energy added in the forms of intention and creativity.

Dancing in the dark
Kristin Snowbird and Theo Pelmus
The Pelmus-Snowbird Collective will present an interactive performance using dance and photography. The performance will be set up as a photo booth. The performers, Theo and Kris dressed in altered traditional costumes (Romanian pagan pre-Christian masked costume, respectively indigenous shawl costume) will invite throughout the night the public to take photos with.

This installation will involve 7 life-sized human tape sculptures that are posed in different stages of grief. These sculptures will be illuminated and will have cracks of gold throughout them. During the 6-hour viewing period of this installation, art viewers can interact with individual sculptures as well as view the grouping as a whole.
The Primary Tones Beacon shines brightly above the LBJ patio and streetscape of Hargrave Ave. Building off the concepts explored in the Illuminate the Night ‘Primary Tones’ installation, the beacon will be an interlocking abstracted display of translucent sheets of red, yellow, blue as a celebration and experiment of layered light and colour.

These walk cycles were created by re-imagining materials from the North as an embodiment of human characteristics and creatures within a 3D environment to bring out their spirit. Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Nuit Blanche at the CMHR
For the first time, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights opens its doors for Nuit Blanche Winnipeg. Featured programming will include an installation by Montreal artist Caroline Monnet, interactive performances with Savant Flaneur, and six stellar musicians performing in partnership with Manitoba Music while projections by Manufacturing Entertainment play. Visitors can take advantage of lounge seating and bar service in Buhler Hall while enjoying the work of diverse artists and musicians from 6 p.m. until midnight. This celebration of artistic expression is free and open to all.

Synapses by Caroline Monnet
Caroline Monnet’s Synapses will be installed outside the Museum’s Group Entrance. Inspired by tree roots, Synapses uses light, sound and intricately textured mirrors to explore how universal modes of communication can bridge divides. The piece is coming from Toronto, where it dazzled at Nuit Blanche 2022, and will be built at the Museum by Joe Kalturnyk.

With Elusive Matter, a minimalist light and sound performance, Martin Messier transforms simple wisps of smoke into a veritable projection screen. Corridors [Installation]
Meander through the hallways and spaces of the 340 Provencher buildings transformed by sound, light and moving visuals. Take in rich and vibrant projections by Saskatoon-based media artist Stephanie Kuse created alongside new soundscapes by Franco-Manitoban artist Rayannah and special guests noon_GhuNNa, French Rk and Amé.

Construction [Contortion x Installation]
Surrounded by a vast and spare environment of sound and light, take in the beguiling and fleeting improvised performances of contemporary artist Anastasia Evsigneeva. Set in a delicate temporary structure, Anastasia moves through dance and contortion, bending to her environment and its short-lived nature. Meander through the space and chance upon her magnetic performances throughout the night.

“Backlit: Orchidae x Brady Allard”
Set in a vivid dream-like space, Franco-Ontarien and Taïwanese ambient artist Orchidae draws in audiences with her hypnotic melodies and textures met by Métis artist Brady Allard’s immersive and experimental compositions. Come and go through this surreal atmosphere lavish with projections by Saskatoon-based media artist Stephanie Kuse and take in the performance from different vantage points throughout the night.

Maker: Chase Martin [Performance x Visual Art]
Discover the innovative and captivating works of Chase Martin through his exhibition Green Green Grass. Each canvas is a window onto a new perspective, a rich dialogue between the vast heritage of traditional artistic expression and the infinite possibilities offered by digital mediums.
Surrounded by this vibrant collection, Chase Martin will move through three stages of the making process for a one time performance in the heart of the gallery. The outcome of the labour will be left in the gallery post-performance.

Enjoy DJ, Drag and dance performances intertwined and flush with colour on the Théâtre Cercle Molière loading dock. Catch talented local artists including Moxie Cotton, Purple Haze, Soleil Midowne, Ruby Chopstix, Lxs Dias Floreadxs and the Studio 393 Dance Troupe offering up diverse and captivating programming throughout the night on this electrifying stage.Presented by HYPERART in collaboration with Sunshine House.

Rapper and singer Anthony OKS brings his lyrical and electrifying performance to the Patio 340 outdoor stage. Underscored by evocative beats and driving melodies, the artist shares his innermost experiences through his work. Performing alongside special one-time collaborators amidst the dynamic and colourful projections of visual artist Stephanie Kuse, Anthony OKS is set for a night not to miss.

Wall-to-Wall x Patterns Collective [Murals]
Collective Patterns Curatorial Statement:
“Sylvia Wynter proposes the human as homo narrans, which is looking at the evolution of “the human as a hybrid- auto- instituting- languaging- storytelling species.” These works presented by Isabel Okoro, Rebecca Bair and Erika Defreitas, embody the exploration of these origins through many of the narratives within their imagery; usage of the ritual, passed down knowledge and imaginings of the future.”

Glow on the Pavement [Activity x Visual Art]
Under new light, the 340 Provencher pavement is transformed with glowing motifs created by young artists from the community under the artistic direction of Dominique Legal. Add your own ephemeral work of fluorescent chalk to this living mural on the asphalt while admiring the moving designs projected onto the surrounding buildings.

Wet Paint is a traveling art show that captures the palpable tension between the MTA and graffiti writers in New York City. When the authorities clean up subway station graffiti by painting over it, they routinely hang a “Wet Paint” sign. Persue pulled down hundreds of these signs and sent them to artists around the world. Each artist made their sign uniquely beautiful.

Welsh-Canadian artist Anne Steves invites us to reflect on the universal and intimate dilemmas of life, loss, and connection – avian and otherwise – through her exhibition Do you whisper a tiny “I’m sorry”. Featuring tufted wool rugs, photographs, and her own written reflections, she transforms images of lifeless birds – her own and those gleaned from friends both near and online – into large, human-scale artworks.
